Mikaela Kautzky "SENSORS"

Mikaela Kautzky "SENSORS"

Sensors began with Mikaela Kautzky’s discovery of a connection between digital camera sensors and mosaics.

A digital camera sensor contains a grid of tiny light-sensitive elements covered by red, green, and blue color filters. Known as the Bayer pattern, this mosaic-like structure receives light and reconstructs it into a full-color image through a process called demosaicing.

For Mikaela, understanding this process revealed a visual world that had always existed behind the finished photograph: RGB patterns, scientific diagrams, VHS artifacts, broken screens, and unexpected spectrums of color created through technological processes and errors.

Working across photography, digital imagery, mosaic-like compositions, and Risograph printing, Sensors explores this hidden visual language by breaking images apart and reconstructing them in physical form.

The exhibition moves between science and intuition, the digital and the physical, and the ways both machines and humans receive and interpret visual information.

Perhaps the camera is not the only sensor.

Perhaps the artist herself is one too.

Sensor
